A small protein made by plasma cells (white blood cells that produce antibodies). It is found in the urine of most people with multiple myeloma (cancer that begins in plasma cells).
The main cause of abnormal Bence-Jones protein levels in your urine is a type of cancer called multiple myeloma. This cancer affects your blood cells and forms tumors inside of your bones. This eventually starts to disrupt your antibody production and leads to high levels of free Bence-Jones protein.
