Leishmaniasis is a disease of the reticuloendothelial system caused by the protozoa of genus Leishmania. All species that infect humans have animal reservoirs and are transmitted by sand flies. The disease manifests in different clinical forms namely cutaneous / mucocutaneous / visceral Leishmaniasis. Positive results are seen in patients with recent infections or past infection with persistently high antibodies. Cross reactive results may be seen with Chagas disease ( prevalent in South America).
